Hello everyone and thanks for reading another report on some things “Wilmington”. I start off this week announcing that our Bicentennial Lapel Pins have arrived. They are on sale for a donation of $2.00 each. The cost of the pins will offset the production expense and help raise additional funds for other Bicentennial activities. The Commemorative Lapel Pins are really sharp looking and will make a unique keepsake. One can get the pins at the Town Offices, Visitors Bureau and Bicentennial events.
Speaking of Bicentennial activities, plans are currently underway to join the organizers of the Wilmington Get Together Event and our Anniversary committee to create a joint effort in celebrating Wilmington’s 200 years. We will advise as more information becomes available.
This week’s History trivia is about baseball. As baseball was becoming popular, Wilmington formed a team. With their “fast swinging” and “combination plays,” they were competitive and often made the local newspapers. In 1923, the team consisted of Jesse Kilburn, Frank Hewitt, Guy Everest, Bert Cooper, Charles Farrell, Billy O’Reilly, Bill Smith, Claude Hathaway, Earl and Cecil Taylor. Once again, I sincerely thank the Wilmington Historical Society for all the information in our weekly history briefs. If you are interested in more historical information, please check out their website at wilmingtonhistoricalsociety.org the site is full of Historical photos and data.
I would like to give a shout out to a neighboring community and encourage residents to check the newest business in Au Sable Forks. Riverside Laundromat recently opened in their community with State of the Art equipment and from all accounts looks really awesome. They offer Wash, dry, fold service with Dry Cleaning drop off. They even offer free Wi-Fi at the facility. For more information, please call 518 647-0222
In other news, the Town of Wilmington is now accepting applications for several job openings. The positions include: Seasonal lifeguards, laborers and a part-time year round senior citizen bus transportation driver. For more information on any of the opportunities, please contact the town offices.
There will be an American Red Cross Lifeguarding Course at North Country Community College starting March 25. A Water Safety Instructor Class is also slated to start in June. Scholarships may be available for these courses. For more information, please call Deb Fox at 518-637-3855
A poster of the Course will be on the Town Facebook page as well as a notice on the Town Bulletin Board at the Wilmington Post Office.
Just a heads up that the DEC has issued a burning ban from March 16 to May 14th. This means no burning grass, brush or anything outside. Violators of the States open burning regulation are subject to criminal and civil enforcement. Minimum fines start at $500. For the first offense.
Finally, as Community Easter event, we are planning an Easter egg Hunt/photo shoot at the Town Park for Wilmington Youth on Saturday April 16th. Please contact the Supervisors Office if you are interested in Volunteering for this event.
That’s all for this week my friends. Stay safe and see you around town. –Roy Holzer
