The weather promises to be more like it—highs on Sunday of 48F with
lows that night of 18F. I have a costume that looks warmish, but I will
put on the layers anyway.
Board Meeting
The Town Board meets on Wednesday, October 30th, starting at 6:45
pm with a public hearing on a local law regarding the Town’s need to
exceed the 2% tax cap. Once that public hearing is closed, another
public hearing will be held on next year’s preliminary budget.
At the close of the public hearings the board will go into regular
meeting to review the budget once more and if appropriate vote on
what to do—adopt, adopt with modifications, etc.
The other item on the agenda will be appointments to the new zoning
board of appeals and the planning board.
Haselton Road
I posted a quick note earlier to Facebook that Essex County started to
pave Haselton Road this morning. It has been part of the rotation for
county paving projects for a while and we are glad they are working on
it this year.
They expect to pave one lane today, maybe some of the second lane,
and finish Monday October 28th.
Intercounty Meeting at Fort Ticonderoga
Yesterday Essex County hosted an association of nearby counties at
Fort Ticonderoga for its regular meeting. The meeting itself ranged over
common topics and questions—guesses about why the governor won’t
sign the new sales tax law for short-term rentals, what’s happening
with sales tax trends, what happens to the even year local election law
now that a court found it unconstitutional. . .
But for me the treat was the tour. Fort Ticonderoga remains an
impressive piece of history that has been carefully and well maintained
over the years. And our guide was terrific.
May 10, 2025 marks 250 years after Ethan Allen and the Green
Mountain Boys surprised the British and seized the fort. Basically,
Washington needed the cannon to break the British blockade of Boston
and Ticonderoga’s cannons were state of the art. Getting them to
Boston is another story.
Have a good weekend.
